1. Profile of the Association

   

The Cyprus Sociological Association was founded in Nicosia-Cyprus in November 1996. The Goals of the Association are:

1. To contribute towards the spread sociological thought in the Cypriot Society

2. The education / training of the members of the Association, as well as the promotion of their usefulness to the benefit of society

3. The safeguarding of the sociological profession of the sociologist and the promotion of the professional engagement of the members

4. The cooperation with research centers, tertiary education institutions and other bodies in matters of sociological interest

Means of achieving these goals:

• Organizing of and participating in conferences, seminars, symposia and lectures.
• Promoting of issues and problems of social interest trough the Mass Media.
• Following developments regarding international social issues and participating in international conferences and associations.
• Contributing to the founding and function of research centers, whose research concerns are of a sociological interest.
• The establishment of the Association’s Library
• The publication or / and participation in publications of sociological interest
• The cooperation with other Sociological associations abroad, as well as with relates to the profession services and institutions that can serve the goals of the association in any way

 

Activities

In the eleven years of its existence, the Association has exhibited a rich and multiple contribution. In particular it organized numerous professional activities, lectures and conferences, the most important being its annual conferences:
• The 1st Annual Conference (1997) “Cypriot Youth: Face and Façade”
• The 2nd Annual Conference (1998) “Family in a changing world”
• The 3rd Annual Conference (2000) “Cypriot Society: Continuity and Change”
• Series of three conferences 2001-02 “Britain and Cyprus: Colonialism and its Impact”
• March 2003 “Society and the City: Accommodating Diversity”
• May 2005 “The Psycho-Social Aspects of Reunification”
• November 2006 “Between Social Change and Nationalism”

All conferences were open to the public

1999 “Family violence” for the Advisory Committee for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family.

1999 Leonardo Da Vinci: Project Loxandra: «Training unskilled and semi-skilled single parents for entering the labour market”

2003-2004 “Bi-communal Perceptions of the Anan Plan” (the UN Secretary’s proposed for a solution for the Cyprus Problem), funded by UNOPS

2004-2005 “Use of prohibited substances in sports in Cyprus”, for the Cyprus Sports Organization

Collaborations

Cyprus Sociological Association is a member of ISA-International Sociological Association

On the 28th of August 2007 a collaboration agreement was signed between Cyprus and Italian Sociological Associations
